$10,000 Racial Equity Grants Awarded To Three School Theatre Programs

Three Cincinnati-area high schools and an Atlanta high school will each receive $10,000 to produce a play over the next two years as part of a program designed to promote racial equity in school theater, the New York Daily News reports.

Inspired by late producer Craig Zadan, the Educational Theatre Foundation's Pathway program allows students in communities of color to work with industry professionals of color while performing works that encourage dialogue around racial equity.

Maynard Jackson High School in Atlanta, Winton Woods High School in Cincinnati, and Cincinnati's School for Creative and Performing Arts will each produce a show for the 2022-23 school year.

Each school's theater director explained how their planned shows would promote the Pathway program's racial equity goals and impact their students and communities.

"The students cited these mentor relationships as especially meaningful, opening their eyes to the many areas of theater while establishing future connections in the industry," the foundation said in a statement.

The Alliance Theatre in Atlanta and Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park will partner with the foundation to support their local Pathway schools.

One of the 2021-22 recipients, Tri-Cities High School, earned multiple accolades in the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards (the Schuler Awards) for its production of Fela! and was invited to give a featured performance at
